Program Summary

This training will begin by giving an overview of FirstLink’s services including our public resource database. The second section of the training will focus on mental health and suicide. This section will include and overview of common mental health conditions as well as myths, statistics, and warning signs for suicide. The training will conclude with a section on the importance of self-care when helping someone with a mental health crisis.

Learning Objectives

  1. Be able to recognize warning signs for suicide
  2. Learn how to assess a person for risk of suicide and work collaboratively on a safe plan
  3. Have knowledge on how to access community resources including FirstLink’s Follow-Up program
  4. Understand the importance of self-care in helping others with mental health concerns

About the Speakers:

Jennifer Illich completed a Bachelor of Science degree in Child Development and Family Science from NDSU in Fargo, ND. Jennifer’s current position is Director of Helpline Operations at FirstLink. She has completed ASIST and MHFA classes and has started the process to become a Sources of Strength trainer.

Ashley Ladbury Hrichena is the Training and Education Coordinator at FirstLink. She has worked at FirstLink since 2007. She is a certified Mental Health First Aid, Youth Mental Health First Aid, safeTALK and Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training Trainer. She graduated from M State in Moorhead, MN with an Associate’s Degree in Liberal Arts.

Angie Hedstrom graduated from North Dakota State University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Child Development and Family Science.  Currently she is a full-time Database and Resource Coordinator at FirstLink. She has been as ASIST Trainer since 2012. 

Jacki Olson graduated from MSUM with a Bachelor’s of Social Work (BSW), a BA in Criminal Justice, and a psychology minor. Jacki is currently a licensed Social Worker in the state of North Dakota and FirstLink’s Suicide Support Program Coordinator. Jacki also has started the process to become a Sources of Strength trainer.
