United Way's New Community Impact Strategy

Educational Luncheon 11:30 a.m.-1:00 p.m.

Presented by United Way of Cass-Clay's Community Impact Director, Tom Hill and President, Sher Thomsen

Program Summary:

The way we think about charity is dead wrong. Too many nonprofits are rewarded for how little they spend -- not for what they get done. Since the financial crisis of 2008, nonprofits have been operating in a “new normal: which is requiring that charitable organizations change the way they do business and how they communicate their impact back to the community.

This change requires dynamic leadership that is unapologetic and willing to operate in innovative ways to create lasting community change. Tom Hill and Sher Thomsen with United Way of Cass-Clay will speak about the evolution in their investment strategy and how they are navigating this change with their community partners. As we head into the upcoming United Way campaign season, let's change the way we think about changing the world!

Speaker Biographies:

Sher Thomsen is a long-time United Way of Cass-Clay volunteer and has lived in Fargo since 2003. She took the role as President of United Way of Cass-Clay in May 2011 with a wide range of non-profit management experience. Most recently, she served in the role of Regional Executive Director for the American Red Cross Minn-Kota Chapter in Fargo for six years. During her tenure, the Minn-Kota Chapter grew from one office serving 12 counties to seven offices serving all of North Dakota and 10 counties in Minnesota.

She earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of Maine and has spent the last 16 years in leadership roles across the non-profit sector in three states from as far away as California and Maine with a varied background covering Mental Health, Animal Welfare, and Human Service organizations.  Prior to her role as President, Sher has served as a United Way of Cass-Clay volunteer in nearly every aspect of the organization, including Board of Trustees, Community Investment Committee, Impact Speaker, Loaned Executive, Campaign Cabinet, and several other committees.

Sher is a mother to 8 year old Heath and 5 year old Pierce and wife/life partner to Joel Thomsen, Executive Vice President for Bell State Bank's Wealth Management Division.  Sher and her family live in Fargo with their their adopted Boston terriers, Candy and Cricket.

Thomas Hill is originally from Bismarck, ND, and graduated from Minnesota State University Moorhead in May of 2008 with a Bachelor of Arts in Communication Studies and Spanish.  Prior to his time at United Way of Cass-Clay (UWCC) he served four years in the United States Army and Army National Guard where he was stationed in Korea (2001) and deployed to Bosnia (2003-2004).  In the summer of 2008, he spent time volunteering in Lima, Peru, teaching English to children in developing communities.

Thomas has been part of the United Way of Cass-Clay (UWCC) team since September of 2008.  In his role as the Community Impact Director, he directs and manages the annual fund distribution process.  He serves as United Way liaison to other community human service programs and agencies; he also organizes community volunteer events to raise awareness of critical community issues.
